Year of the Yin Earth Ox

The year of the Yin Earth Ox, 2009, is symbolized by two elements and both are Earth. There is no conflict between two similar elements. Therefore predictions for the year are balance, peace, rebuilding and caring for families and the Earth. The Ox is reliable and hardworking and will support those who are willing to work consistently and methodically on creating a stronger foundation. Interestingly, the new President Barak Obama is also a Yin Earth person and naturally will be supported by the energy of the Ox.

Change is on the Way: Home is the Best Place to Start

The year of the Earth Ox promotes greater stability, consistency, and slow and steady progress, but there is also a feeling of deep underlying change that is necessary and already underway. It is coming whether we want it or not, ready for it or not. We cannot just do things the same way so we'd better align ourselves with the new energy. We need to start somewhere and I want to invite you to start from your home. I know that many of us have already begun to be more aware of what we buy, how much we spend and how we do things. Many have changed regular light bulbs to energy saving bulbs, recycle more and buy produce at the local farmer's market, but more can be done. To produce lasting and sustainable results, we need to look deeper into our habits and patterns to see what is holding us back and where we can improve.

During my consulting, I have seen how homes and the things inside them influence the inhabitants, either holding and supporting their energy or depleting it. I can see how our personal subconscious patterns influence the way we buy things and design our spaces. At the same time, those spaces influence us back so there is a loop which is often very difficult to break even when change is wanted. Feng Shui suggests a way out of this by making our environment aligned with our goals rather than subconscious patterns that no longer serve us.

I want to share a few observations for you to start with. The first is that our homes are filled with way too many things that we don't really like or want. It seems strange but when we buy things without much though they don't reflect what we really need. We then proceed to buy more because the things we buy do not reflect who we are and what we want! We feel unsatisfied and continue buying in hopes of something working out. Another observation is that often we position things in a way that does not create a good flow. Sometimes I am contacted because people think they need to buy new furniture and accessories, but the actual reason for their dissatisfaction is the existing furniture is poorly placed and energy flow is disrupted. Instead of creating a feeling of comfort and relaxation, the poor arrangement creates a feeling of stress and unease.

Here are few steps to help you create more supportive and harmonious environment.

Dealing with what you Already Have

Next time you are in relaxed state of mind, take a slow and conscious walk through your home and tune into furniture pieces, accessories, art and other household items. Observe your reactions. Sometimes it will be clear to you if you like the thing or not, but if it is not so obvious, these questions will help you.

  • Does the object feel light, or heavy to you? (I don't mean weight).
  • Does it feel warm or cold?
  • Does it connect you with happy memories or unhappy memories?
  • Notice how you feel while looking at it and compare that with how you want to feel.

This simple exercise will reveal if you have surrounded yourself with things that support your energy or not. If you have many things that do not feel good, you might start contemplating why you bought those things. You might discover a lot about your subconscious patterns and see to what degree they rule your life. It would also be a good idea to observe how easy or difficult is for you to get rid of things that do not support you.

Dealing With New Things

Before you buy something, take a moment and tune into the thing you are buying, be it a piece of furniture, art, accessory, clothing or any other household item.

  • Does it feel light or heavy?
  • Does it feel warm or cold?
  • Is there a feeling of opening or closing in your energy?
  • Does it uplift your energy or pull it down?
  • Ask yourself if is this how you want to feel.

Simple Shopping Guidelines

  • Do not buy things just because they just look good or match something. It is important that they feel good too.
  • Do not buy anything that makes you feel different (worse) from the way you want to feel.
    • Buy fewer items that are good quality and, if possible, locally made.
    • Instead of buying more art, tap into your own creativity and make something yourself! For example, you can take your own digital photos, enlarge them, frame them and place them on the walls. Pictures that depict some amazing places that you've been or happy family moments will connect you to those places or events and will create an atmosphere of love, excitement, joy and creativity.
  • Instead of buying your child another new toy, spend time with them. Your time is a very precious gift.
  • Instead of buying each other a present, cook a special meal for your spouse, partner or friend and spend time with them.
  • Buy services rather than things. Nurture yourself with massage, energize yourself with acupuncture, and indulge in a Broadway show, vacation or retreat.
