Greetings!

Spring is on the way! We don't need to know Feng Shui to feel that the element that rules during this time is Wood. Wood represents growth, innovation and action. It is a rising type of energy so this is the perfect time to come up with new ideas and start implementing them. If something sprouted in your mind during the last few months, it is time to align yourself with the energy of the universe and let it grow.

Not surprisingly, the Wood element relates to wealth in Feng Shui. Of course, we want our wealth to grow like a healthy, strong tree, but Wood does not grow without Water. Therefore, Water is another element that relates to wealth. You can find some good tips on how to raise Wood energy inside your house in my spring 2006 newsletter. This time I want to talk about the garden.

Feng Shui for Gardens

We respond to our surroundings through our five senses which are sight, sound, touch, taste and smell. If we consciously engage all of these senses in the garden, we can enrich our experiences and emotional states.

Sight
Red, orange and bright yellow colors along with sharper shapes create excitement and passion. They are great for energizing an area. On the other hand, blues, purples and whites, combined with softer, curvier shapes help create more tranquil and relaxing spaces. The sight of different shapes and colors is the most obvious way to create different experiences in the garden, but we shouldn't overlook the other four senses.

Sound
What can be more peaceful than the sound of nature, like birds singing or the humming of bees? I often encourage my clients to place bird feeders and bird baths in their gardens to attract more wildlife. Also, the sound of gurgling water is very relaxing and refreshing and the tune of a wind chime can be quite uplifting.

Touch
Leaves of different plants, grasses, and the texture of bark can provide a range of different sensations: soft, hard, smooth, gentle and rough. We can derive a lot of pleasure from touching different plants, the moist soil or feeling the warmth of stones in the evening. The garden is a perfect place to engage the sense of touch.

Taste
Nothing tastes better than tomatoes and raspberries that I grow in my own garden! My vegetable and herb garden is my favorite part of the yard. I grow peppers, cucumbers, potatoes, garlic, onions, lettuces and all kinds of herbs and everything tastes so much better than even organic produce from the local farm. And the most rewarding part of this is the work itself: nurturing and observing the growth. It connects me with the land, seasons and nature.

Smell
Nature provides an incredible range of smells that help create memories and add to our emotions of joy and relaxation. It is great to have a few plants in your garden that you really love to smell. Also, the natural smell of soil and grass after a rainfall or when you water the garden after a hot day is very refreshing.

By engaging all of our senses within the garden, we create a deeper connection between ourselves and nature and this is the essence of Feng Shui.

There is also a specific Feng Shui principle that can be implemented in our gardens to infuse our surroundings with vital energy that will help us feel tranquil and inspired at the same time. We always feel more harmonious if we have a good balance of Yin and Yang. Therefore, we need both:

  • a place that is open, sunny, with a lot of free moving Chi and brighter colored vegetation that will inspire and energize us
  • a quiet, more enclosed and contained place where we can de-stress and recharge our energy

Having both energetic and tranquil spots within your garden will stimulate different senses and create a complete experience.

Enhancing Prosperity and Relationships

When I consult, I always walk the property to assess the energy of the site. If the site itself has good Feng Shui, it will support good luck and good health. Everything will fall into place easily, your life and business will improve and you will feel balanced and strong. On the other hand, if it is not a good Feng Shui site, you may feel that your energy is constantly drained to maintain balance in your life and your home. You might also find that you have to work harder to reach your goals and that you feel stressed most of the time. These are the extremes and the majority of properties fall somewhere in between. This means that they could use some work to enhance their qualities and provide better support for the occupants.

Many of my clients are interested in enhancing wealth and relationships. Sometimes it is easier to do this outside rather than indoors, depending on the architecture of the house.

Southeast is the direction of the rising sun and wealth. If the land in the E and SE sections of your property is slightly higher than the land in the W or NW, it supports greater wealth for the family. If it is lower or the same height, it might be a good idea to raise the Chi there by introducing fast growing, tall and strong plants. Brighter colored plants and light poles are other options. Water is the element that increases the vitality of a site. Careful consideration is needed in placing a water feature but in many cases the SE would be a very appropriate place, especially for moving water. Water that flows towards a house is associated with supporting Wood and bringing in Chi and wealth while water that flows away from the house carries wealth away.

Relationships for most of us are associated with the nurturing and supportive energy of the Earth element. The SW in the northern hemisphere has those qualities of gentleness, quietness and warmth so SW is the direction of relationships, marriage and motherly energy. Creating a rock garden in the SW will strengthen the Earth element. Also, placing ceramic or stone statues, especially two statues that represent love and nurturing will bring good energy to your relationships.

Of course, it is a good idea to create good flow in your garden and blend those special places that you will create in the SE and SW with the general landscape of your property. This can be done by carefully considering the shape of the lot, proximity to the road, and what is already naturally in these sections, etc. Keep in mind that Feng Shui is about living in harmony with nature and living in harmony with your heart.

Happy gardening!
